6:07 p.m.: And the marathon match is over. Suffern won game five 25-13 and is headed to the regional semifinals on Tuesday at Section 4.
Great job by the Mounties hanging in that game four. Once they knotted up the match, the fifth set was all theirs.
Casey will have more on this match later. For now, we’re getting set for the Class B championship between No. 1 Hen Hud and No. 2 Pelham. This match was supposed to start at 6 p.m., but it will probably be more like 7 p.m.Â
The stands here at John Jay are packed and we’ve still got one more match, so stay tuned here for updates. Gotta run for now.Â
6:01 p.m.: The Mounties have gone in front 17-9 and appear to be on their way to regionals. In the meantime, I’ve made cool ranch doritos and gatorade my dinner. Mmmm. Healthy.Â
5:53 p.m.: Suffern has jumped out to an 11-6 lead in game five. Looks like Arlington is the team on the ropes now.Â
5:46 p.m.: I hadn’t seen a match go past three games until last night. Now I’m seeing one go to five. I almost don’t know what happens next. Are there any different rules I should be aware of?
What a game. Suffern won 25-23 to tie the match at two and the fifth set is just underway.
Volleyball guru Casey Tolfree is covering this one, but she also just informed me (somehow her cell phone works here… well, sort of) that Dobbs Ferry lost to Croton-Harmon in football? Wow. What a huge day across all of Section 1 sports and there’s still plenty more volleyball to come. Â
5:38 p.m.: Suffern has grabbed a 20-19 lead in game four. The Mounties were down 18-16, but scored four straight points. This match is about as close as it can get.Â
5:29 p.m.: Arlington leads 12-9 in the fourth game. After dropping the first game, the Admirals have grabbed a 2-1 lead in the match.Â
5:17 p.m.: Arlington claimed the second set, 25-18. The Admirals now lead 2-1 and have a strong chance of pulling the upset over top-seeded Suffern, the defending champions in Class AA.
These teams didn’t meet during the season. But one coach who has seen both teams play said that Arlington had a great chance to win before the match started. Game four is in the early stages, but I’ll keep the updates coming. Â
5:10 p.m.: We’ve got a real battle going on between No. 1 Suffern and No. 3 Arlington. The Mounties won the first game, but Arlington won game two to tie it up.
Game three is tight as well, but Arlington has pulled in front 18-15. Moments ago, Suffern got a tough break when it was ruled one of their players tipped a ball that a player on Arlington had hit out. From my perspective (and coach Sean Barnes) it didn’t look like anyone touched the ball. So instead of 16-15, Suffern went down 17-14. The Mounties were down 15-8, though, in the game, so we’ll see if they can make another rally.
