Walter Panas hosted the sixth annual grass doubles tournament on August 10, drawing a massive 36 teams to the event, including three boys teams. Panas coach Joe Felipe and John Jay coach Tom Rizzotti ran the event, with help from other coaches.
Coach Rizzotti was kind enough to send a recap of the event, along with some pictures of the winners. Here is Rizzotti’s recap of the day:
This year the Hudson Valley Volleyball Coaches Association hosted their sixth annual Outdoor High School Doubles Tournament. This year it was held on Saturday, August 10. Thirty-three girls teams from 22 schools and three boys teams from two schools played on a beautiful sunny day on the grass fields of Panas High School.
The teams represented Arlington, Carmel, Croton, Haldane, Hen Hud, Horace Greely, Iona Prep, Kennedy Catholic, John Jay, John Jay-East Fishkill, Mahopac, Marie Regina, New Fairfield (Connecticut), Ossining, Panas, Pawling, Putnam Valley, Rhinebeck, Scarsdale, St. Patricks, Ursuline, Washingtonville and Yorktown.
Each girls level — A and B — had 16 teams separated into four pools of four, with one pool of five in the B level. They played two games to 25 points in pool play, with the top two teams advancing to the final. It was a lot of fun watching the athletes play volleyball in a whole different environment — having to take into consideration the wind, the sun and covering the whole court with only two people. The teams did an excellent job and had a lot of fun. Everyone left saying what a “great time it was,” even the parents.
Congratulations do need to be given to the teams in each division that made it to the finals, and to the winners of each division. In the boys division, the winners were Jeremy Torella and Will Ackerman from Arlington (left) and the runners up were James Fitzpatrick and Michael Gallagher from Iona Prep. The winners of the B division for the girls were Tara Malone from Marie Regina and Megan Gallagher from St. Patricks (above). The runners up were Kira Payman and Rachel Torella from Arlington. For the A girls division the winners were Kelly Vahos from Haldane and Amanda Flayhan from John Jay, and the runners up were Chelsea and Maddie Barberan from John Jay-East Fishkill.
It was a great day and we are looking forward to running it again next year and hope for even more teams.
