I’ll do my best to keep tabs on the college circuits, in addition to the high schools — predominately on the local colleges and any individual accomplishments from Lower Hudson Valley natives or graduates. If you hear of anything college-related, let me know and I’ll be happy to add it.
Downstate Volleyball Club director and head coach Daniel Altro was named the head coach at Dominican College last week. Altro was also a head coach at Carmel back in the day, so there’s still a high school tie.
Here’s the school’s article:
ORANGEBURG — Dominican College Director of Athletics, Joseph S. Clinton, has announced the hiring of Daniel Altro, as the new head women’s volleyball coach.
Altro has over 25 years of coaching experience at the club, high school and collegiate level in the sport of volleyball. His most recent collegiate coaching was at Pace University where he spent six seasons at the helm of the Setters. In his time at Pace, the Setters made five conference championship appearances.
Prior to Pace, he has also served as the head coach at Western Connecticut State University and New York City Technical College.
“I am honored to be here at Dominican College. I look forward to continuing and building upon the success that former coach Carrington had brought to this program,” said Altro. “ I wish to thank Dominican College President,Sister Mary Eileen O’Brien; Athletic Director, Joe Clinton and Kelly-Ann DiGiulio Light, for this opportunity and hope to meet and exceed their expectations of me.”
Altro also has high school coaching experience as he had a stint at Carmel High School.
“We are thrilled to have Daniel join the Dominican College family as the new women’s volleyball coach,” Clinton said. “His extensive experience and knowledge in the sport of volleyball made him a prime candidate for the position and I am confident that he will continue to maintain the high level of success of the past two seasons.”
Altro is also well known among the club ranks as he has been the director and head coach of the Downstate Juniors Volleyball Club for over 20 years. In this time he has coached numerous players that have gone on to play collegiate volleyball and receive All-American and Player of the Year honors.
He is also the head coach of the Hudson Valley Regional team that competes in the Empire State Games.
Altro is a 1989 graduate of the University of Western Florida and is currently a computer system engineer with Metro North Railroad.
