Yorktown volleyball coach Katy Sherwood spent Monday night repeating the words “push five” to her team.
Apparently the Huskers heard the fourth-year varsity coach loud and clear after working back from a five-point deficit in the first game. They beat visiting Hen Hud 25-18, 25-10, 25-21 in the season opener.
“That’s how we always start, so I wasn’t panicked and they weren’t either,” Sherwood said. “All we worry about is getting to five. Once we get five, then 10, and thinking like that seems to help a lot.”
It is the first time Yorktown has beaten Hen Hud while Sherwood, who spent seven seasons as the junior varsity coach, has been a part of the program.
The Huskers avoided forced errors and got the ball outside to the hitters. Kristen Sweeney had 11 kills and four aces. Danielle DeIulio had 16 assists.
Sherwood said the team pulled together for an all-around effort. Other key contributions came from Angelea McPartin and Catalina Munoz, who each had three kills.
Gabby Kempski and Gillian Stieglitz had five kills each for the Sailors. Teammate Lindsay Pelaccio had 18 digs.
The Huskers will next host Somers Thursday at 4:15 p.m.
Best of the rest: Juliette Kost had eight kills in Dobbs Ferry’s 25-5, 25-15, 25-4 sweep over Palisade Prep. Teammate Alexis Demitrovic had eight aces, five kills and 19 assists. … Molly Marks had 10 kills in Blind Brook’s 25-8, 25-4, 25-7 win over Port Chester. Michaella Antony added 22 assists for the Trojans. …Kristella Morina had 15 kills in Yonkers’ 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 25-22 win over Keio. Karolina Fik added five kills and 30 assists. Kanako Bando and Saya Adachi had eight kills each for Keio. … Kally Vahos had 15 kills and nine digs for Haldane in a 25-17, 25-19, 25-17 loss. Teammate Sara Chirico had 15 assists and six digs.
I’ll post my game story link, video, and notes from the Suffern-Albertus Magnus thriller in a separate post, but in the meantime, here’s a scoreboard recap of the results we received tonight. (Editor’s note: Since most coaches are adjusting to the new stats system, we may not get all results early on. If you have any scores that are not posted, let me know and I will update the posts.)
