While I was out of the office, here’s what my compadres compiled tonight, leading with Panas’ sweep over Ursuline in a rematch of last year’s Class A section final:
Panas coach Joe Felipe knew going into Tuesday night’s match that Ursuline had some strong hitters. When it was over, the Panthers appeared to have the strongest hitter of them all.
Brigitte Burcescu dominated the floor with 25 kills and five aces in a 25-10, 25-18, 25-18 Panas victory.
Ball distribution was no problem for Allie Patriciello, who dished out 25 assists for the Panthers.
“Patriciello put the ball in the right spot and sometimes that looks like an easy job, but it still takes a good set to put the ball away,” Felipe said.
Felipe added that libero Victoria Fletcher was impressive with 11 digs.
Ursuline’s top hitter, Shannon Mckeon, finished with 10 kills. Victoria Caruso added five kills and 11 assists.
“Shannon is definitely one of the better players in the section,” Felipe said. “Once we got the hitters out of the back row, it was a good opportunity for us to score some points.”
Despite the loss, Ursuline coach Gigi Kemp was able to find a silver lining.
“It was a good match and a good start to the season. They are a respectable team,” Kemp said. “Our challenge is keep building on each game whether we win or lose and we will see them again in the sectionals.”
Best of the rest: Nicole Franciosa had 12 kills for Pelham in a 25-15, 17-25, 25-22, 25-16 win over Haldane. Amanda Flayhan had eight kills and 23 assists in John Jay’s 20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19 win over John Jay-EF. Anne Marie Altomare and Morgan Rollins each had six kills for Holy Child in a 25-11, 25-10, 25-8 sweep of Hewitt School. Caroline Erb had 10 kills and 12 attacks in Kennedy’s 25-5, 25-7, 25-6 win over Spellman. Alexis Demitrovic had 10 kills and 19 assists in Dobbs Ferry’s 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21 win over Rye Neck.
