If the first month of the season in any indication of what is to come at the Section 1 tournament, then Las Vegas would probably have Coach Tom Rizzotti’s Indians as favorites to take home the Class A crown.
After winning the Minisink tournament earlier this year, John Jay was at it again this past weekend — grabbing the top seed at the 15-team Millbrook tournament on Saturday before eventually taking home the gold.
The Indians posted a perfect 8-0 record in pool play, amassing a +89 point differential to secure the No. 1 seed just ahead of Cornwall, who accumulated a +81 PD. John Jay then disposed of St. John in the semifinals, 25-22, before sweeping Cornwall in the championship match, 26-24, 25-20. The Indians, who are now 20-1 in tournament play this season, trailed 19-11 in the opening game of the championship before surging a comeback for the win.
Pool A consisted of Arlington, FDR-Hyde Park, Middletown and Millbrook, Waterford. Pool B consisted of Saugerties, Cornwall, Voorheeseville, Red Hook and Beacon. Pool C was rounded out with St. John, Burke, Wallkill, John Jay and Guilderland.
Enormous thanks to Chad Flayhan for keeping me posted throughout the day while I was at Yorktown. I’ll try and get the Scarsdale tournaments results and post them as soon as possible.
