(In my best Michael Buffer voice) In the white corner — she is an all-section libero and tournament MVP of the Minisink tournament — a junior from John Jay-Cross River High School, Theresa Swertfager! And in the blue corner — she is a three-time state champion coach with more than 400 wins to her credit — your Section 1 coordinator for girls volleyball, from Hendrick Hudson High School, Diane Swertfager!
For the dozens in attendance, and the hundreds following on Twitter around the Lower Hudson Valley; ladies and gentlemen, lllllllllllet’s get ready to rumble!
Since there’s no “bowl” or “cup” in volleyball, I don’t really know what you can call it. The “Swertfager Showdown” maybe? In any case, Theresa Swertfager and her Indians will take on her mother Diane’s Sailors in what will be another installment of this (friendly) family rivalry. It will be the first of three matches between the two teams this season. I wonder what the “trash talk” is going to be like before school tomorrow?
Another match to watch includes a heavyweight Class C battle between Albertus-Magnus and Blind Brook in what could be a preview to the section final in October. Also keep an eye on Arlington-Haldane; the Blue Devils could really use a big win to jump-start their season, while the Admirals can look to keep rolling after a somewhat slow start.
