Entering the week, it was no secret that Haldane’s season was crumbling and that its chances at the section tournament were dwindling. Needing a big week, Blue Devils captain Kelly Vahos put on two exceptional performances to give the 10-time reigning Class D section champs two wins and some much-needed breathing room.
Vahos collected 34 kills, 19 digs and seven blocks in two wins for the Blue Devils, including a shocking sweep of John Jay on Friday. The junior had 21 kills and recorded all of her blocks on Wednesday against Hen Hud. The wins, both of which came against league opponents, improved the Blue Devils to 4-5 overall on the season.
Due to a change in the section tournament qualifying standards (which you’ll read more about in tomorrow’s Journal News, with much more details at lohud.com), Haldane was in serious jeopardy of missing out of this year’s section tournament. These two wins were enormous for the Blue Devils, who now should have a much better shot at making the tournament.
For that, Kelly Vahos is this week’s Player of the Week.
