It’s a match I’m sure most of us have been waiting for all season — John Jay vs. Panas.
In what could very well be a possible preview of this year’s Class A section final, this meeting of perennial powerhouses promises not to disappoint. The two teams have both had its streaky moments this season, both good and bad. Panas dropped back-to-back contests earlier this year to Yorktown and John Jay-East Fishkill, respectively, before catching fire in regular season and tournament play.
John Jay got off to a torrid-hot start this year, winning both the Minisink and Millbrook tournaments in addition to a brief undefeated stint before falling to Yorktown. The Indians stayed hot, but were recent swept by an equally hot (or arguably more so) Haldane team, which was just 3-5 at the time.
With Class A juggernauts opponents beating up on each other (Yorktown > John Jay, Yorktown > Panas regular season, Panas > Yorktown tournament, etc.), it will be nice to see the final piece of this trifect’A’ play out. Given Panas’ recent chemistry and John Jay’s recent “struggles,” I’m giving Panas the edge here. The fact that Panas is planning a “blackout night” for its fan section with only aid to the Panthers’ home-court advantage. My official prediction: Panas wins, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-22.
I will be staying local (well, my local, anyway) to watch Clarkstown North host my alma mater, North Rockland in what should be a competitive Class AA contest. I see a ton of potential in the Rams right now, while the Red Raiders are on their way to becoming the section-title contenders they once were.
I can see this match going either way, to be honest. I think the ball is in Clarkstown North’s court, both figuratively and literally. The Rams are the host and, in my opinion, the more well-rounded team of the two. Both have some talented young players, so, like I said, it wouldn’t surprise me who won. Picking a side, I’m going with the Rams in five, 25-18, 21-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-18.
