CORTLANDT — With its latest tournament win, Panas is building a track record that shows it is more than capable of defending its Class A sectional and regional titles this season.
The Panthers took top honors at their host tournament, the Panther Invitational, on Saturday, besting a field of 25 teams.
The Panthers topped Yorktown in the final, 25-10, to claim their fourth Panas Invitational title, and third in four years (2010, 2012, 2013). The final was a rematch of the Yorktown tournament championship.
“We were playing looser, they were having fun; and when you do that, it’s easier to put streaks together,” Panas coach Joe Felipe said. “When you’re playing some of these better teams, (those streaks) help a lot.”
Northeastern-bound senior Brigitte Burcescu was named the tournament MVP for the Panthers, adding to her top-player honors from the Yorktown and Clarkstown South tournaments earlier this year.
Panas teammates and fellow seniors Shaina Campbell and Victoria Fletcher were also named to the all-tournament team. Rounding out the team was Nicolina Chenard of Ardsley, Caroline Erb of Kennedy, Jessica Figueroa of Yorktown, Alexandria Jergens of Cornwall, Barbara Kapustin of Clarkstown South and Kamilla Tatka of Byram Hills.
The top 10 teams on Saturday advanced into the gold bracket, with the next 10 advancing to the silver bracket. Suffern, which fell into the silver bracket after a third tiebreaker, lost to Monroe-Woodbury in the silver bracket final.
The Mounties tied Horace Greeley in overall record and split their two-game match with the Quakers, but had a lower head-to-head point differential.
(Editor’s note: Panas donated $2,000 to the Side Out Foundation at this year’s tournament)
