The clock is winding down, but we may finally get to the bottom of this section tournament fiasco.
I spoke with Ardsley coach Dave Ponterio last night and, among other things, asked if he knew when Section 1 would be making its presentation to the athletic council to resolve the issue of how many matches would be used in determining a team’s qualifying number.
Ponterio said he was unsure of when the meeting would take place, but according to Ruben Vahos, father of Haldane standout Kelly Vahos, the meeting will take place sometime today.
As you can see from the time post, the tweet came in about 13 hours ago. I spoke to Ponterio around 8 p.m. last night.
@Zacchio_LoHud Section 1 Athletic Council meeting tomorrow..so perhaps we will know tomorrow if seeding is based on 16 or 20 matches?

The athletic council ruled that all teams must use 20 matches when calculating its year-end qualifying number. The section will make a counteroffer of 16 matches. No word on whether the athletic council will make its executive decision today or within the next week.
With the section tournament seeding meeting on Wednesday morning, one would assume that a decision would be made by Tuesday night at the absolute latest. My feeling is that the 16-match proposal will be approved.
— The athletic council had good intentions of trying to make all teams use the same number of matches, but you can’t change a rule after teams already make their schedules.
— Volleyball is so vastly different than other sports that there really needs to be an exception (for this year, at least). Teams can make adjustments to their schedules next year, when they’ll actually know what the format is ahead of time.
— Finally, with a unanimous agreement from the section — of volleyball coaches — I really can’t see the athletic council turning down a proposal that affects the volleyball schedule.
I will keep you all updated as soon as I hear anything. I’ll be in touch with Section 1 coordinator Diane Swertfager later tonight to get a recap of the meeting. Stay tuned.
