After weeks and weeks of volleyball, I’m finally going to get to see Dobbs Ferry in action. The Eagles (15-0), which are making noise all around the section out of Class C, will travel to Mamaroneck in what could lock up the league title.
If my math is correct, and assuming the records for both teams are right in the LoHud database, a win for Dobbs Ferry would mathematically clinch the league. I’m sure Eagles coach Patty Duane will now that one for sure on Thursday.
The Eagles, three wins away from a perfect regular season, appear to be the favorites in Class C simply based off of record. I have kept them out of my top 10 for two main reasons: 1. I haven’t seen them (there’s nearly 100 schools in our coverage area; it’s tough to see everyone), and 2. Their schedule doesn’t compare to that of other top-10 teams. No knock against the Eagles — they can still be the “real deal” and just not have had the kind of schedule to really showcase it. We’ll find out Thursday.
Despite all of this hype, it is still not my “match of the night” on Thursday. That honor belongs to Suffern-Clarkstown South.
Arguably the top two teams in Rockland, and winners of the last two Class AA section and regional titles, respectively, this match will definitely be one to watch. It is even being pegged as LoHud’s “must-see event” for the day — in any sport.
I’ve teeter-tottered about who belongs in the top 10 between these two all year because they seem about even. So when Suffern swept the Vikings earlier this year, it was a surprise. When Clarkstown North beat Clarkstown South on Tuesday, it was an even bigger surprise.
Between both of those factors, mixed with South being on its home court, I think there’s next-to-no shot Suffern sweeps again. The Vikings will be too hungry to let that happen again. My prediction is Suffern in four, 25-20, 19-25, 25-22, 25-19.
