HARRISON — The long-awaited anticipation has finally come to an end, as the official seeds for this year’s Section 1 volleyball tournament were released Wednesday morning at Southern Westchester BOCES.
All-in-all, there weren’t any surprises at the top, with John Jay-East Fishkill (AA), Yorktown (A), Ardsley (B), Dobbs Ferry (C) and Keio (D) grabbing the top seeds. I knew the No. 1 spot would be close between Dobbs Ferry and Blind Brook, and it ultimately came down to two points. The Eagles (18-0) had an index — the number that ranks each team — that was one-tenth ahead of the Trojans (17-1). High seeds aside, it was the middle of the brackets that were somewhat of a surprise.
Class AA was pretty much how I expected it, with the exception of Mount Vernon. The Knights didn’t have all of their matches in our database, so I couldn’t tell what their points were, let alone figure out bonus points for their opponents. Same thing with Lincoln in Class A; with out its full schedule, I had no idea where it would land. The big surprise of the tournament, in my opinion, had to be Hen Hud at No. 10 in Class B — setting up a rematch of last year’s championship, in the quarterfinals, should the Sailors get past Peekskill.
The Pelicans have eliminated the Sailors in each of the last two seasons (2012 championship, 2011 semifinals) and will now have the opportunity to make it a hat trick. The crowds for Pelham-Hen Hud are usually pretty good, so, assuming Hen Hud beats Peekskill, which I’m predicting it will, I’m expecting plenty of the Pelham faithful and the Hen Hud “Bleacher Creatures” at Pelham next Thursday.
Below is the complete schedule for this year’s Section 1 tournament. I will make my predictions in a separate post — which may include the first-ever LoHud volleyball podcast (I’ve been kicking the idea around, and people have asked about it, so why not?). Finally, please do not forget about the live LoHud chat tonight at 7:30 p.m. You don’t need to do anything than come here to the blog and fire away and questions, concerns, comments, etc. you have. Since this will be a new experience for all you (unless you’ve participated in a chat in another sport in the past), I would suggest going to the blog at like 7 or 7:15 p.m. (if you’re around) just so you can make sure everything shows up and possibly familiarize yourself with it. Again, it’s very, very simple and yes, you can post anonymously or under an alias if you wish. Anyway, back to the tournament:
