Saying that Hen Hud had to earn its Class B section title is a massive understatement. After drawing a paltry No. 10 seed, its lowest in nearly a quarter-century under Diane Swertfager, the Sailors had to win four matches on the road to claim the section crown.
In what could’ve easily been a first-round matchup, except with maybe reversed seeds, the Sailors swept No. 7 Peekskill, setting up the gauntlet of their bracket. Hen Hud then downed the top three seeds in the tournament — No. 2 Pelham, No. 3 Byram Hills and top-seeded Ardsley to claim its 12th section title in 14 years.
Hen Hud (pictured right), which entered the postseason with a 7-9 record due to its power-league schedule (finished 1-7 in the league) handed Ardsley (18-1) its only loss of the season in order to clinch a spot in the state regional semifinal on Saturday. To punch a ticket to Glens Falls, the Sailors will have to defeat the undefeated yet again.
Here is the preview information:
What: NYSPHSAA Class B regional championship
Who: Hendrick Hudson (11-9) vs. Owego Free Academy (19-0)
When: Saturday, November 9 at 3 p.m.
Where: Arlington High School
What you need to know about Owego: The Indians claimed their third consecutive Section 4 championship on Saturday, sweeping Maine-Endwell somewhat handily. Owego, which is ranked 17th in state by MaxPreps, then swept Section 9 representative Marlboro easily in Tuesday’s regional semifinal.
The Indians are described as a very “well-rounded group,” with no standout star. The roster doesn’t feature a plethora of height, although 6-foot-3 middle Rachel Merrill could give the Sailors a tough time at the net. Here’s a brief video preview of the Indians.
Hen Hud is currently ranked 83rd in the state by MaxPreps; both rankings are for all classes, not just Class B teams. The combined records of Hen Hud’s last four opponents (including Owego) entering each match will be 63-8, including back-to-back matches against undefeated squads.
