Hot off the printers from Purchase College comes the news that freshman volleyball standout Alicia McCarthy has been named a first-team All-Skyline Conference selection, as well as the conference’s Rookie of the Year. Also named to the first team was New Rochelle alum Ashleigh Scozzari of Mount Saint Vincent. I’ve added Scozzari’s presser at the bottom of this post, but first, here is the full press release on McCarthy from the man, the myth, the legend, Purchase Sports Information Director Bobby “Bobby C” Ciafardini:
PURCHASE — Alicia McCarthy is the toast of the Skyline Conference.
In addition, McCarthy is also an All-Skyline 1st Team selection. She ranks among the conference leaders with 2.85 kills per set (fourth), 3.47 points per set (fourth) and 0.55 aces per set (10th). Named the Skyline Rookie of the Week on Sept. 16, the outside hitter from Plano, Texas, has compiled 201 digs – good for second on the team – along with 40 service aces.
Junior Helen Putriment of Sage has been named the Skyline Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year in voting conducted among the Conference’s ten head coaches.
The Skyline coaches also selected Tobey Pantophlet of St. Joseph’s-LI as Coach of the Year.
Putriment enters the Gators’ Nov. 9 contest versus Mount Saint Mary in the semifinals of the Skyline Championship leading the league in kills per set (3.24) and is ranked second in digs (4.00 per set). A five-time Skyline Player of the Week selection, the junior outside hitter from Troy, NY, also leads the conference in points per set (3.65) and has more than 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills for her career.
Putriment was named to the all-tournament team at the Scranton Invitational and Endicott Tournament while leading Sage to the Skyline regular season crown with a perfect 9-0 record.
Joining McCarthy on the all-conference first team includes Joanie Cooney and Katelyn Drollette of Sage; Farmingdale State’s Sarah Palladino; Heather Ferchland and Julianne Tierney of St. Joseph’s-LI; and Mount Saint Vincent’s Ashleigh Scozzari.
The second-team all-conference includes Farmingdale State’s Maia Cadle-Hinton and Megan Pisciotta; Jen Gries, Kayla Kurka and Claire Scully of Mount Saint Mary; Melissa Garibaldi of St. Joseph’s-L.I.; and Mount Saint Vincent’s Maria Leineweber.
In his ninth season, Pantophlet has guided the Golden Eagles to a 19-12 overall record and the No. 2 seed in the 2013 Skyline Championship. SJC posted a 7-2 mark in league play and enters its semifinal match on Nov. 9 against Farmingdale State having won six of its last seven matches.
Here is the press release from Mount Saint Vincent on Scozzari’s first-team selection. The sophomore (pictured above), an alum of New Rochelle, was the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year last season for the Dolphins:
NEW YORK – College of Mount Saint Vincent sophomore Ashleigh Scozzari (New Rochelle, N.Y.) has been honored as a Skyline Conference Co-Player of the Week it was announced on Monday afternoon. Scozzari, the 2012 league Rookie of the Year, collected the second weekly award of her career.
Mount Saint Vincent finished the week a perfect 2-0, including a five set Skyline Conference victory over Old Westbury on Saturday. Scozzari led the way for the Dolphins by averaging 3.50 kills, 3.33 digs and 0.83 total blocks per set.
After appearing in one set and registering two kills in a 3-0 win at Centenary on Thursday, Scozzari posted career-highs in kills with 19 and digs with 20 in a 3-2 win over Old Westbury. Scozzari also added an ace and five total blocks to the winning effort against the Panthers.
With her performance last week, Scozzari moved atop the team leaderboard in kills with 170 and is averaging 3.15 kills per set. She also sits second on the team in total blocks with 27 and fourth in digs with 119.
With the two victories last week, Mount Saint Vincent stands at 6-15 overall on the season and at 4-3 in league play. Next up for the Dolphins is a home non-conference match on Tuesday with William Paterson. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
