The American Volleyball Coaches Association released its list of 100 Under Armour All-American high school players yesterday, with Panas senior Brigitte Burcescu grabbing an honorable mention nod.
Burcescu (pictured below) was one of only three New Yorkers selected from the prestigious list, and joins her sister Vivian, a sophomore at the University of Virginia, as family honorees. Vivian, the Journal News Westchester/Putnam player of the year in 2011, a season before Brigitte took the title, was a second-team selection in her senior year.
The younger Burcescu, the middle child in a family of three daughters, shattered several school records during her senior campaign this year — all of which belonged to her older sister at one point. Burcescu set school marks in single-match kills, single-season kills, and career kills; the first two of which she re-broke after surpassing her sister’s marks a year ago.
After leading Panas to its first section and regional title last year, Burcescu took the third-seeded Panthers to the Section 1 Class A semifinals this year, where they were denied by seconded-seeded John Jay in the form a sweep. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter will take her talents to Northeastern next season.
