John Jay-East Fishkill hitter Megan Theiller was named to the Class AA all-tournament team at the NYSPHSAA volleyball championships in Glens Falls this weekend. The senior led the Patriots to the best finish of any Section 1 Class AA team at the state tournament, becoming the first team to win a game in the pool play semifinals. John Jay-EF, the fourth consecutive Section 1 team to qualify for the Class AA semifinals, finished 3-3 in pool play.
I was also informed that Theiller, an all-state, Division-1 recruit in softball and volleyball, signed her National Letter of Intent to play volleyball for Fairfield University. Below is a preview of my Poughkeepsie Journal colleague Phil Strum’s game story on John Jay-East Fishkill’s semifinals performance on Saturday. The link to the full story follows the preview.
Before Saturday, John Jay coach Kalah Lipinski said, no Section 1 Class AA team had ever even won a game in the semifinal round. While John Jay does graduate six seniors, including hitter Megan Theiller (pictured right), setter Courtney Barbara and libero Chelsea Barberan, the team will have a core of returnees as it looks to achieve success next season.
Juniors Taylor Luzzi and Kellyanne Cherry, and sophomores Madylen Barberan and Samantha Fitzgerald figure to be the returning players tasked with following up on a season where the team was 21-1 entering pool play.
