Another year has come and gone, and another trip to the NYSPHSAA volleyball championships in Glens Falls is in the books. Both Section 1 teams left with plenty to celebrate, including one state title. Here is a recap of the weekend for the local teams in our area:
Haldane, making its fourth consecutive trip to the Civic Center, posted a 5-1 record in pool play and swept Randolph in the Class D championship match. The two have now met in finals six times in the last nine years, with each team winning three times (Haldane has won the last two — 2013, 2011).
Junior Kelly Vahos was named the tournament MVP, which was also her third-straight all-tournament team selection. The 6-foot-2 hitter dominated the competition all weekend and was the obvious MVP choice. Senior teammates Katie Cunningham and Sara Chirico were also named to the all-tournament team. The Blue Devils were announced as the “Team Sportsmanship” award winners following the title victory.
Although John Jay-East Fishkill did not advance to Sunday’s Class AA final, it still left its mark. The Patriots became the first Section 1 Class AA team to ever win a game in the pool play semifinals, posting an even 3-3 mark. Clarkstown South, Suffern and Arlington, the representatives of the last three years, respectively, were winless in each of their six games, and no prior Section 1 team made it to the Class AA semifinals since the class was established in 2004, according to our records.
Patriots senior Megan Theiller was named to the all-tournament team, days after signing her National Letter of Intent to play for Fairfield next year. The Patriots were 21-1 entering the pool play semifinals.
Stay tuned for my “postseason coverage plans” post. I will do my best to keep this blog as updated as possible throughout the offseason, so I’ll let you know what’s going on. My LoHud all-stars articles run on December 4.
Editor’s note: I wanted to extend a personal “Thank you” to Joe Agostinelli and the staff of the NYSPHSAA; you guys run an exceptional tournament and are always so accommodating and helpful. Glens Falls is always a memorable trip for me, and this year was no different. Although, this year may be for slightly different reasons than years past… See you all again next year!
