I was scheduled to cover tennis today, but rain washed that out. My colleague Adrian Szkolar filled in for me tonight:
Brewster may have been the lower seed but the Bears roared past Horace Greeley Thursday to kick off the 2014 sectional volleyball tournament.
Led by Frannie Merkel‘s nine kills and Erin Hurley‘s 13-assist, eight-dig performance, No. 17 Brewster swept host No. 16 Horace Greeley 25-20, 28-26, 25-16 in the lone Class A outbracket game.
“It was awesome,” Brewster coach Alicia Cavallo said. “There is no other word to describe how well we came out and played. We were consistent throughout the whole game.”
Brewster moves on to the next round looking for redemption against top-seeded Yorktown on Friday. The Bears were swept by the Huskers on Tuesday in their regular-season finale.
“Yorktown is an incredibly talented team but my girls were right there,” Cavallo said. “I don’t think it’s going to be as easy as it looks for them.”
Boys volleyball: Jordan Housman had 18 kills and six blocks and Sean Culwell had seven kills, seven digs, 17 assists and five service aces in Clarkstown North’s 20-15, 25-17, 25-21, 25-19 win over visiting Clarkstown South. The Rams will take on Suffern on Oct. 30 in the sectional championship game.
