Since I don’t want to blow up everyone’s Twitter feed with updates from the NYSPHSAA pool play rounds, I will keep updating this post as often as I can with scores from the Class AA, A, B pool play rounds, which feature Suffern, John Jay and Ardsley, respectively. I have a clear look at Suffern and John Jay, but Ardsley is tougher to see, so I apologize if Ardsley updates aren’t as frequent off the bat.
Format: For those unfamiliar, teams play each opponent in a two-game pool play match. The top two teams, based on overall record, will advance to Sunday’s best-of-five championship match. Haldane (Class D) is in the afternoon heat. If there is a tie, it goes to head-to-head record. If still tied, there will be a one-game, 25-point playoff. … If there is a three-way tie, tiebreakers will be head-to-head record. If still tied, teams are seeded based on point differential; the top seed is automatically in, the other two play a one-game, 25-point playoff. … If all four teams are tied, the same tiebreakers apply. If all split, teams are seeds Nos. 1-4, with the top seed playing the bottom seed; winners of each playoff advance to the final.

Outlook: First off, sorry for all of the back-and-forth confusion with Ardsley. From where I’m sitting, it’s tough to see the scores (plus, my long-range vision of small numbers is awful). The Panthers will have John Glenn in their next match, which should really tells us where they stand. … Suffern taking that second game was enormous. Aside from the fact that it goes out with a win going into its next match, you never want to fall into an 0-2 hole in pool play. Splitting — against a tough Penfield team, mind you — is a win in the overall picture. … John Jay had — in my opinion — the toughest opponent in the field right out of the gate. It struggled early, obviously (trailing 17-4 at one point), but after that deficit, Pittsford-Sutherland only outscored it 33-30. Like I said, going 0-2 to start your day is not optimal, but when it’s against the defending champions, it’s not the worst thing in the world. If John Jay sweeps its next match, it should be back in business.
