GLENS FALLS — There are certain images that I have seen over the course of my four years on the job that are — for better or worse — memorable. The look of unadulterated shock on Haldane senior middle blocker Kelly Vahos‘ face after the final point of the match was a sight that will probably stick with me for a while.
The Blue Devils dropped a five-game thriller to Portville in the Class D state title match, falling 26-24 in the deciding fifth game after holding a 24-22 lead. It was Haldane’s fifth consecutive NYSPHSAA final and gave Portville coach Kelly Unverdorben her second state title in three years with two different programs (won with Ellicottville in 2012, which swept Haldane).
Haldane displayed impeccable defense during the match, including a standout performance from junior libero Melissa Tringali (above). Vahos and junior Nicole Etta were named the all-tournament team following the match.
