The NYSPHSAA Executive Committee approved a motion on Friday to keep the Glens Falls Civic Center host of the girls’ state finals through 2017. The boys’ semifinals and finals will be moved to Suffolk Community College through the 2017 season.
Other possible sites for the girls’ tournament included Onondaga Community College and Corning-Painted Post High School. Several local coaches and players who attended the regional finals hosted by Corning-Painted Post this year said that it would make an excellent site to host the state semifinals and finals.
The Post Star was the first to report that the Civic Center’s initial bid — approved by the state girls volleyball committee in August — was denied by the NYSPHSAA in October. Here are detailed breakdowns of the three potential sites, obtained by the Post Star.
The Civic Center, which has hosted the girls’ semifinals and finals since 2006, trimmed $12,000 off its initial bid, according to the Post Star. The paper also reported that neighboring businesses — including hotels — acted to keep the tournament in Glens Falls by offering discounts for spectators.
